MAKEUP PROCUREMENT

Lip Gloss or Eyeshadow? Planning Your First Makeup Collection

Your first makeup collection needs a clear reason for customers to choose it. Start with the look they want, how they shop and the products you can explain well. Then decide whether a focused lip range, an eye palette or a carefully limited combination supports that plan.

This guide helps new brands and beauty retailers build a product and shade brief. It also separates two different requests: buying an existing finished product for resale and developing an eligible product under your own brand. A product in the TopPerfume makeup catalogue is a reference to discuss, not automatic confirmation of private-label eligibility.

Define the customer and the look before choosing products

Write a short description of your intended customer, sales channel and desired makeup finish. A store where customers can compare physical samples needs a different presentation plan from an online launch built around photographs and demonstrations.

Choose the role of each proposed product. It might introduce your colour direction, complement something you already sell or answer a specific request from your audience. Avoid adding shades simply to make the collection appear larger: each extra version creates another quantity, sample and specification to confirm.

Compare what lip gloss and eyeshadow need to show

Neither category is automatically the better first purchase. Compare the information you can obtain and the demonstration you can provide, as well as the appearance of the product itself.

What needs a clear identity? Exact product, shade reference and version Exact palette and the shades included; whether it is sold as a fixed unit
What should customers see? Product and shade photographs under recorded conditions The full palette plus identifiable shade images and demonstrations

The Hydrating Mirror-Shine Lip Glaze and Mocha Chocolate 9-Shade Eyeshadow Palette are two existing catalogue references you can use to start a discussion. The latter is presented as a nine-shade palette. Request the exact sample and available product information before selecting either for your range.

Names and catalogue images help identify the references. They do not establish wear duration, suitability for every skin tone, available custom shades or permission to apply your own logo.

Plan shades around a specific assortment

Describe the colour direction you want and how each proposed shade differs from the others. Use supplier shade codes when confirmed. Until then, mark a reference as provisional and connect it to a photograph or physical sample instead of inventing a code.

A screen image is useful for shortlisting, but it should not be your only colour record. Ask for samples and document the appearance under consistent lighting. Keep the product reference and the conditions attached to your photographs so that later decisions can refer to the same item.

Treat a palette and individual shades as different order units

A palette containing several shades may be supplied as one fixed product. That does not mean each pan can be selected, replaced or ordered separately. Ask whether you are quoting a finished palette, a selection from existing shade options or a separate development request.

For lip products, ask how the quantity is allocated between shades. Do not assume that a minimum for one reference can be divided across every colour shown in a catalogue.

Inspect the packaging before preparing your logo

Record the container, cap or closure, applicator or pan layout and any outer packaging supplied with the sample. Note the usable branding area as a question for the supplier; a visible surface is not proof that a particular printing method is available.

If you want your own brand, submit that as a separate project request. Ask which product options are eligible, what can change and which components the quote includes. Do not commission final artwork around an unconfirmed tube, palette or carton.

TopPerfume works as a trading and sourcing partner. Customization depends on the selected product, supplier and agreed scope. Perfume project minimums should not be transferred to a lip or eye product without confirmation of the applicable makeup project terms.

Ask exactly how the MOQ is counted

Request a written quantity breakdown covering the finished product, shade, packaging version and artwork version where relevant. Keep the finished-product wholesale requirement separate from logo or packaging customization requirements.

For example, an inquiry for several lip shades should list the proposed quantity of each shade, then ask whether the combination is accepted. It is a request for confirmation, not a claim that mixed shades satisfy a supplier's minimum.

Ask for product, customization, sample and freight costs to be identified separately. Sample availability can be confirmed for the selected product or project. Samples are charged, and shipping is paid by the buyer. No single sample charge or makeup customization minimum is assumed in this guide.

Record samples before making launch claims

Keep photographs of the product, shade identity, packaging and your application observations together. Follow the supplied usage instructions. Record the lighting, application method and any differences between comparisons instead of treating every photograph as directly equivalent.

Use observations to decide what to ask next. A preferred finish or texture is a selection note. It does not substantiate waterproof, fixed wear-time, ingredient, vegan or other claims that need product-specific evidence. Ask for the relevant information before putting such claims on packaging or a sales page.

Build a first-collection worksheet

Copy one row for each proposed product or version. Leave unresolved fields open until you have the corresponding sample or supplier response.

Send a focused brief for the next step

Send your target customer, chosen product direction, shade plan, expected quantities and destination. State whether you want the existing finished product or need TopPerfume to review a separate private-label project. Attach product links so that similar-looking references are not confused.

Discuss timing after the product and customization scope are clear. Lead time depends on the customization scope and project requirements. A preferred launch date is a planning input, not a confirmed production or arrival commitment.

Use the contact and order-terms page to start that discussion with your worksheet and remaining questions.

Questions buyers often ask

Should I launch both lip and eye products at once?

Only include both when you can explain each product's role and confirm the samples, quantities and budget involved. A focused first range can be easier to describe and review; this is a planning choice, not a guaranteed sales outcome.

Can I put my logo on either catalogue reference?

Eligibility for these exact references needs confirmation. Ask for suitable project options and a specific quote. An existing product page or wholesale minimum does not establish customization availability.

Can different shades be combined to meet a minimum?

Submit the proposed breakdown and ask for the accepted allocation in writing. Mixed-shade or mixed-SKU rules must be confirmed for the product or project.
